        A篇

The Harp Seal is one of nature's most beautiful and lovely creatures(動(dòng)物). Many years ago it was hunted for its white fur. Catching or killing Harp Seal is now against law.

The Seals spend the summer months moving in large groups. Harp Seals close their noses and ear holes when swimming deep in water, but they have to come out of the water for air from time to time. Their favourite place to rest is on the top of icebergs(冰山).

The mother Harp Seal gives babies in February or March and feeds her children for 14-18 days. Baby Harp Seals begin to lose their white fur at around six to eight weeks of age. When they grow up, the Harp Seals have brown skin. At birth, Harp Seals weigh 12kg but can weigh up to 130kg as they become grown-ups. Harp Seals eat small fish, shrimps(蝦) and krill(磷蝦). However they are living in different places. Father Harp Seals can live as long as 29 years while mother Harp Seals usually live for longer than 30 years.

Since the Canadian Government passed laws to keep the baby seals from hunters, their numbers have gone up to more than one million. Now every year, thousands of visitors crowd to the pack ice(大片浮冰上) to witness the wonderful picture of newly-born Harp Seals.

Make Your Home a Happier Place

Have you ever had a dream to make your home a happier place? Maybe there are some points you can follow. Sometimes you don't think your parents are fair to you. When you want to dress in a modern way, your mum doesn't like you wearing a mini-skirt. When you are making phone calls to friends, they ask if you're speaking to a boy or a girl. Sometimes it seems that you're not as close to your parents as you used to be. How can you become close again?

Closing the Gap by American writer Jay McGraw gives advice on how to have a better relationship with your parents. He gives ways to help you understand your parents. When you think, "My parents don't want me to have any fun," that usually means your parents want you to be safe. Both parents and children have needs. They need to feel they are important and loved. You should tell your parents your needs, and find out what their needs are. Then, you can think of a way to make all of you happy. He gives you some ideas:

(1)Make time to talk. You could talk about your school life and your plans for the future.

(2)Keep a diary. This is to help you understand more about yourself and your feelings.

(3)Show your parents you are growing up. Wash your clothes and help clean the house.

Your parents will feel that you are no longer a little child. If you follow these steps, soon you will be able to break down the walls between your parents and yourself.

        C篇

Around twenty years ago I was living in Seattle and going through hard times. I could not find a satisfying job and I found this especially difficult as I had a lot of experience and a Master's degree.

To my shame I was driving a school bus to make ends meet and living with friends. I had been through five interviews with a company and one day between bus runs they called to say I did not get the job.

Later that afternoon, while doing my rounds throught a quiet neighborhood I had an internal (inside) wave-like a scrcam (尖叫)-come up from deep inside me and I thought "Why has my life become so hard?"….

Immediately after this internal scream I pulled the bus over to drop off a little girl and as she passed she handed me an earring saying I should keep it in case somebody looked for it. The earring was stamped with words "BE HAPPY".

At first I got angry. Then it hit me. I had been putting all of my energies into what was wrong with my life rather than what was right! I decided then and there to make a list of 50 things I was thankful to.

At first it was hard, then it got easier. One day I decided to up it to 75. That night there was a phone call for me, asking if I would do a one-day training for 200 hospital workers. I said yes and got the job.

My day with the hospital workers went very well. I got a standing welcome and many more days of work. To this day I know that it was because I changed my attitude (態(tài)度) to gratitude.

By chance, the day after I found the earring the girl asked me if anyone had looked for it. I told her no and she said "I guess it was meant for you then."

I spent the next year doing training workshops all around the Seattle area and then decided to risk everything and go back to Scotland where I had lived before. I closed my one-man business and bought a plane ticket. One month later I met my wonderful English wife and best friend of 15 years now. We live in a small beautiful house in Scotland.

"THE ONLY ATTITUDE IS GRATITUDE" has been my motto (座右銘) for years now and yes, it completely changed my life.
